How to discover the province of Alicante at your own pace
Tips for where to go in Alicante for a relaxed holiday
The province of Alicante, in southeastern Spain, is renowned for its sun-drenched beaches, drawing thousands of tourists every year. Yet, there are endless diverse experiences to be found inland, beyond the sand and the sea. In this guide, we’ll look at Alicante’s lesser-known treasures and how to explore them at your own pace.
A journey through time
While the larger cities, like Murcia or Alicante, have a lot to offer, the smaller villages are where you will find the true historical charm. With so many gems in the region, a car rental in Alicante is recommended – having a vehicle will let you explore each place at your own pace, without having to worry about public transport schedules or booking guided tours. Here is one example of a fascinating historical route:
Start at Guadalest, a mountainous village known for its iconic cliff-top castle. Enjoy the breathtaking views as well as visit local museums. Next up, drive to Biar, an hour away, to explore the Mediaeval side of the region. Featuring a 12th-century castle, the town is a hub for manufacture of dolls and pottery.
Less than 15 minutes drive away you will reach Villena, another stunning historical town, home to the Atalaya Castle, a significant regional fortification. The town is famous for holding the Treasure of Villena, which can be seen in the museum. Finally, a stop at the nearby Sax is a must, for its dramatic castle perched on a rock (it’s part of the Vinalopó castle route across Europe).
Nature spots for a quiet escape
If you prefer to spend your time in nature, Alicante does not disappoint either! Sierra de Mariola Natural Park is one of the most popular reserves and hiking areas in the region, filled with beautiful landscapes as well as rich flora and fauna.
Similarly, the Tibi Reservoir or the Tibi Dam is not just one of the oldest non-Roman dams in Europe, but also a complete engineering marvel. It offers scenic beauty and gentle walks around the area. Additionally, Fonts de l'Algar is another must-visit nature reserve, home to powerful waterfalls and peaceful springs, perfect for swimming or simply enjoying a picnic.
Moreover, the beaches are, of course, a huge part of Alicante’s coast, but you do not have to stick to the most crowded places. For instance, Cala del Moraig is a secluded pebble beach, framed by natural stone cliffs and crystal clear waters. It’s the ideal destination for snorkelling and kayaking or exploring the Cova dels Arcs sea cave. Playa de Cala Ambolo is another gem, accessible via a hike down the cliff, which makes it even more tranquil. It’s the perfect spot if you want to escape the crowds.
The flavours of Alicante
If you are someone who explores a region through its cuisine, Alicante will provide a truly delicious journey! From rice dishes (arroces), like seafood rice and rice stew, to authentic paella, there are so many mouth-watering meals to savour. And, don’t forget to pair your dish with a local wine, since Alicante is known for its wine making traditions, producing unique flavours appreciated across the globe.
The best places to try authentic cuisine are the local restaurants and cafes. Avoid large chain franchises and, instead, opt for family-run businesses that serve traditional meals made from local, fresh produce. The markets or food festivals are also a brilliant opportunity to experience the region’s gastronomy first-hand.
Choosing your own pace
Alicante has a wealth of experiences, far beyond the popular tourist attractions. Renting a car and venturing off the beaten path, all at your own rhythm, will offer the most authentic way to explore this rich and vibrant region.
