Swimming once again allowed at Cala Cerrada after two-day closure due to water contamination
Bathing resumes in La Zenia after water quality deemed safe by regional authorities
The ironically named Cala Cerrada beach – which means ‘Closed Cove’ in Spanish – in La Zenia has reopened for swimming following a two-day closure prompted by the detection of contaminated water.
Orihuela Town Hall received authorisation from the Directorate General for Water of the Regional Ministry for the Environment to lift the ban last Friday July 4 after new tests confirmed that the water now meets safety standards.
The beach was closed after a water sample taken last Wednesday 2 revealed pollution of residual origin. Subsequent work was carried out to eliminate the spillage, and a second sample was collected to verify improvements in water quality.
The latest analysis, conducted by the regional department, showed that the water met the required quality standards. While the overall rating is classed as “sufficient” – the lowest passing grade – the appearance and cleanliness of the water have been rated as “excellent”.
Swimming is once again permitted at Cala Cerrada, although monitoring will continue under the weekly quality control programme in place during the summer months.
Further down the coast, swimming on the beach of Puerto de Mazarrón was also banned for a short period last week due to the presence of unhealthy levels of human waste in the water.
