Discover La Murta, Murcia's tiniest village with a big heart
A peaceful hamlet of just 97 residents, surrounded by almond trees, pine forests and starry skies
Nestled in the Sierra de Carrascoy, only 20 kilometres from Murcia city, La Murta is the smallest town in the region with just 97 inhabitants recorded in 2022. Despite its size, it’s rich with natural beauty and local charm, offering visitors a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle.
The landscape is dominated by fields of almond trees, which bloom spectacularly in spring, painting the scenery in soft pastel tones. Surrounding pine and oak forests provide the perfect backdrop for hiking and canyoning, popular activities that attract more adventurous visitors.Rural tourism has grown significantly in recent years, and more and more visitors are discovering La Murta. The town has adapted its services to welcome these adventurers, ensuring hiking and canyoning enthusiasts have everything they need to explore the beautiful forests around the area.
Life in La Murta is peaceful. Locals enjoy simple pleasures – a bar-restaurant, a senior centre, and a traditional wood-fired oven baking delicious homemade bread are at the heart of the community. The village’s ancient hermitage dedicated to the Santa Cruz is a cultural highlight, with annual patron saint festivities in April and May bringing everyone together.
One of La Murta’s most unusual features is its municipal astronomical observatory. Thanks to the clear, pollution-free skies, stargazing here is exceptional, drawing astronomy lovers from far and wide.
While the town’s population has dwindled over the years, with 120 residents at its peak in 2001, those who live here cherish the quiet lifestyle amid stunning natural surroundings. For many, La Murta is a hidden gem - a rare combination of rural peace, tradition and nature just a short drive from the city.
Whether you’re seeking a little adventure, culture, or simply a break from city life, La Murta offers a unique and welcoming sanctuary.
