Danish man rescued from treacherous Orihuela Costa cliffs
The victim was trapped at the bottom of an 8-metre overhang near Cala Caleta in Cabo Roig
Guardia Civil officers faced a challenging rescue operation on Monday afternoon, June 10, when they received reports of someone who had fallen from the cliffs and become trapped in Cabo Roig.
The incident unfolded at 1.40pm when officers were alerted to a Danish man trapped in a difficult-to-access area of the coastline. When they arrived, a woman was able to guide them to the location where the injured person lay at the bottom of an eight-metre cliff, situated between the breakwater and Cala Caleta beach.
The rescue presented immediate challenges. The terrain was both wet and extremely steep, making it very difficult and dangerous for rescuers to reach the victim. To make matters much worse, the tide was beginning to rise, so time really was of the essence.
Despite the obvious risks involved, the Guardia Civil officers had to push ahead with the rescue as quickly as possible. They carefully made their way down to the victim, where they worked alongside the first firefighters to arrive on scene. Together, they managed to move the injured man to a more secure and stable position on the rocky coastline.
The coordinated rescue effort intensified by 2pm as multiple emergency services converged on the scene. Guardia civil officers, firefighters and Orihuela Costa Local Police worked together to secure the victim to a stretcher and begin the careful process of lifting him up the eight-metre cliff face.
Once they reached the top, the challenge wasn't over. The emergency teams then had to carry the stretcher more than 600 metres uphill to reach an accessible evacuation point. This demanding trek required sustained effort from all the rescue personnel involved.
The injured man was finally handed over to medics and transferred to Torrevieja Hospital.
