August 30 Guided night tour of the old mines of Las Matildes and Mina Blanca near La Unión
Insights into the mining past of this part of Murcia include the rare sight of Cornish industrial architecture in the Costa Cálida!
The visitors centre at the abandoned mine of Mina las Matildes in El Beal, in the Campo de Cartagena between La Unión and the shore of the Mar Menor (click for map) is the start and end point of this evening hike on Saturday 31st August, during which participants will see not only Las Matildes but also Mina Blanca, the two of them sometimes referred to as “Las Damas Blancas” (The White Ladies) of the Sierra Minera.
The walk begins at 19.30 at Mina Las Matildes and includes the Rambla de Las Matildes, the pool of sterile substances of the Mina Segunda Primavera and Mina Blanca, a unique example of Cornish mining architecture in the Region of Murcia – Cornish Mining has named an Item of World Heritage by UNESCO!
Walkers then continue to a calcination kiln, and the Mina Telémaco before returning to Mina Las Matildes, where a guided tour of the buildings is offered.
Registration costs 8 euros for adults and 6 euros for children, and can be made via this form, by telephone on 628 073482 or 968 537 570 by email to lasmatildes@fundacionsierraminera.org. An additional phone, that of the Fundación Sierra Minera, is manned on weekday mornings (968 540344).
Walkers should wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring a torch, and also a sandwich or snack to consume by the light of the stars during a stop-off along the way. The entire tour is expected to last 3 and a half hours, although the distance covered is only 2 kilometres.
