A week of summer heat: Spain weather forecast September 15-18
Daytime temperatures could approach 40ºC in many parts of Spain this week
Average temperatures expected on Wednesday September 17
September has reached its midpoint, but temperatures are still more typical of August. A very warm air mass will bring anticyclonic weather to virtually the entire country this week, with temperatures higher than normal for this time of year, according to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
With summer refusing to call it a day, several parts of Spain will experience sky-high daytime temperatures and clammy nights again this week. The mercury is tipped to soar past 35°C for much of the week in Extremadura, Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha and the southern region of Madrid.
Likewise, areas such as the Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys could experience temperatures above 38°C for several consecutive days.
This trend won’t be short-lived either, as Aemet is already predicting that the week from September 22 to 28 will also be "warm for the time of year, with little rainfall in most of the country."
Weather outlook on Monday September 15
The scorching temperatures will already be noticeable on Monday September 15, with highs exceeding 34°C in low-lying areas of the southwest and in parts of the Canary Islands. The mercury could climb to 36°C in the Guadalquivir and even 38°C in Badajoz.
Practically all of Spain can look forward to bright, sunny skies on Monday with the exception of the north, where the passage of an Atlantic front will leave cloudy and overcast skies in Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea and the Pyrenees.
Temperatures will continue to climb on Tuesday September 16, and Aemet has even activated a yellow weather warning for extreme heat in Extremadura. In general, the temperatures will exceed 34°C in much of the southern Atlantic coast and in parts of the Canary Islands, even reaching 36°C in the main valleys.
Weather outlook on Tuesday September 16
The weather will become even more summery on Wednesday September 17 and this will continue to the end of the week, with the likes of Sevilla, Córdoba and Jaén predicted to exceed 40°C in the shade.
Madrid and Zaragoza are also expected to experience highs of between 36 and 37°C, a completely unusual figure for the third week of September, in contrast to the 25°C temperatures that northern cities such as A Coruña, Oviedo, Santander and Bilbao could record.
Weather outlook on Wednesday September 17
General stability will continue across the country on Thursday September 18, with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Only periods of low cloud cover will occur, with likely morning mist and fog, in the far north of Spain and the Balearic Islands.
Weather outlook on Thursday September 18
Meanwhile, night-time temperatures will also creep up again as the week goes by, with Aemet stating that thermometers will not fall below 20°C in the Mediterranean region and parts of the southwest.
The warmest nights are forecast in the province of Jaén, although it will also be uncomfortably hot in Sevilla, Córdoba and the southern Canary Islands, with torrid nights on the cards when temperatures won’t dip below 25°C.
